Sundays in the Pines: The Panthers and Charlotte's Football Month
Panthers' Sundays at the big stadium, the 49ers in University City, and the bowl game waiting at year's end — Charlotte's November sporting map.

On autumn Sundays, Charlotte's sporting center of gravity shifts four blocks west, to the stadium in the pines. Bank of America Stadium — opened in 1996, ringed by its arches and its panther statues — hosts the Carolina Panthers in the fall and Charlotte FC's soccer crowds in the spring and summer, two tenants dividing the calendar of the city's biggest room.
The stadium has aged the way Charlotte institutions are expected to: continuously, and in public. Its conversion to artificial turf in 2021 ended the era of the muddy November field; renovation debates — suites, concourses, the surrounding district — are a permanent feature of the sports pages, as is the building's second life as a concert and event venue, from international soccer exhibitions to the Duke's Mayo Bowl, the college bowl game that closes the stadium's football year around the holidays.
The Panthers' November is the NFL's sorting month: the division races in the NFC South tighten, the injury lists lengthen, and the season's story — contender, spoiler, or rebuilding project — declares itself before the Thanksgiving turn. Charlotte's fans, who have ridden two Super Bowl runs in the franchise's three decades, calibrate hope accordingly.
A mile and a half east, the college game keeps its own room. UNC Charlotte's 49ers play at Jerry Richardson Stadium in the University City area — a young program by college football standards, playing in a stadium built for the program's 2013 launch and expanded ambitions since. The 49ers' November conference games draw the alumni the university's growth keeps manufacturing.
And above the local fixtures hangs the region's other November ritual: the college basketball season opening in arenas across the Carolinas, in the state where the sport is a civic religion. Football holds the weekends a while longer. The gyms are already full.
